Skincare should extend beyond the face and body. A dry, itchy scalp is a common complaint, and yet scalp care is often neglected in beauty routines. Here are some common symptoms, causes and best of all, solutions for nourished, balanced scalp.
Dry Scalp Symptoms
They can vary but often include:
- Small, white flakes on hair and scalp
- Tight-feeling skin
- Dry skin on other areas of the body
What Causes Dry Scalp?
It can have many causes. While a dry, itchy scalp may be the result of an underlying condition such as psoriasis or dermatitis, it often isn’t serious and can be treated with skincare and lifestyle changes. Understanding the cause is essential in finding an effective dry scalp remedy.
Shampoos are formulated to remove moisture and oil from the scalp. Over-washing can strip away natural oils and reduce moisture retention, resulting in dry, itchy scalp. Using very hot water to wash hair can also dry out scalp and contribute to flaking and itchiness.
A change in climate is a common cause of dry, itchy scalp. During colder months, the drop in humidity levels can dry out skin, including scalp. Excessive exposure to artificial heat, such as central heating, can also decrease moisture retention and dry it out.
Using haircare products with high alcohol content that upsets the skin’s natural Ph balance can also result in dry, itchy scalp. Hair dyes can cause dryness as colouring the hair often requires harsh chemicals and bleach.
How to Fix Dry Scalp
Though some causes of dry scalp may seem inevitable, making some simple changes can help to prevent excessive moisture loss and soothe itchiness.
Wash Hair Less Frequently
Reducing the number of times you wash hair each week will limit exposure to drying shampoos and hot water. Using cool water can also help to increase moisture retention and reduce scalp dryness.
Applying a scalp reviver is a great way to reduce shampoo use without compromising on freshly-cleansed look. The Omorovicza Scalp Reviver is one of our best dry scalp treatments. It absorbs oil at the roots, leaving hair and scalp instantly refreshed.
Infused with salicylic acid, menthol and camphor, it gently exfoliates to reduce flaking and unblock hair follicles, while also soothing irritation and protecting against environmental aggressors.
How to use: Shake it well, then use the pipette to apply a few drops directly to the scalp, sectioning hair as needed. Massage gently into the roots of the hair for a soothed and refreshed scalp.
Use a Scalp Treatment
One of the most effective ways to treat dry scalp is to soothe irritation and boost hydration with a mask. Omorovicza’s Revitalising Scalp Mask is a pre-shampoo treatment formulated with Hungarian moor mud, salicylic acid and menthol, to purify, exfoliate and soothe the scalp.
How to use: Using the tube applicator, apply a generous amount directly onto the scalp. Massage in gently and leave for 10-20 minutes before rinsing the hair thoroughly.
