Your skin, but better: How to get a natural makeup look

Playing with makeup to create sexy smokey eyes or bold red lips can be fun, but not so realistic for most days when you want a more natural look for the office or a casual night out.

Contrary to popular belief, the “no makeup” look does require makeup but it’s not by being heavy-handed and layering foundation to cover up flaws.

Instead, it’s about enhancing your beauty and achieving barely-there coverage.

It’s also a great look for Malaysia’s hot and humid climate; you’ll be Instagram-ready all the time without needing Facetune or filters.

Think of it as your skin, but better.

Below, we share an easy guide to achieving a natural makeup look that’s fresh, radiant and effortless.

Hello, hydration!

Skincare should always be a priority before makeup, so make sure you’re washing your face correctly, keeping it hydrated and moisturised, and exfoliating once or twice a week.

If your skin is particularly dry or dehydrated, apply a face oil to moisturise your skin prior to primer and foundation. Chock-full of antioxidants, the Grown Alchemist Antioxidant Facial Oil Rosehip and Camelia Seed is organically certified with vitamins A and C, and essential fatty acids to plump up the skin and restore elasticity.

Primer is your new BFF

A good primer can go a long way. This little baby not only blurs fine lines and blemishes, it also provides a smooth canvas for foundation or BB cream to last all day.

You’ll often find silicone as a main ingredient in primers to fill in pores and achieve a silky, matte finish.

The award-winning Ren Perfect Canvas primer is silicone-free

However, if you’re blemish-prone or would prefer to avoid silicone altogether, opt for the Ren Perfect Canvas. Doubling as a skin serum, this silicone-free primer fills in pores and provides a smooth finish like any silicone-based primer.

To give dull complexion a boost of radiance, try the By Terry Cellularose Brightening CC Serum, a best seller at Ken’s Apothecary. This colour-correcting serum is said to give off so much glow that some of our customers go without foundation altogether for an easy, everyday look.

Barely-there coverage

Put aside your full coverage foundation and contouring kit for now; the “no makeup” look is the opposite of a sculpted, airbrushed complexion.

Rather, look for BB creams or tinted moisturisers to achieve an overall even tone while letting your natural skin show.

A BB cream like the Ren Satin Perfection has a silicone-free formula that self-adjusts on light to medium skin tones and results in a satin finish. With SPF15 and antioxidants, it also protects the skin against anti-ageing.

Likewise, the oil-free Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Tinted Moisturiser is a complexion corrector that targets dark spots and provides extra hydration. Its built-in SPF20 and mineral pigments conceals flaws while protecting skin at the same time.

A light foundation like the By Terry Nude-Expert Stick Foundation offers sheer coverage and comes with a built-in highlighter for a subtle, shimmery glow.

Brighten up those peepers

The natural makeup look is all about looking effortlessly fresh and bright-eyed.

Blend a creamy concealer like the By Terry Stylo-Expert Click Stick to brighten up dark circles and cover eye bags. This lightweight yet highly pigmented concealer melts into skin for a natural finish.

Eyebrows that are groomed will instantly uplift the eye area. Keep it naturally full by brushing on the By Terry Eyebrow Mascara to fill in any sparse areas and hold it in place.

To enhance lashes, swipe on mascara like the By Terry Lash Expert Twist Brush, which features an innovative brush system that adds length and volume. The twisted brush thickens the lashes for unlimited volume without clumping.

If you’re already blessed with long lashes, then skip mascara and go au natural!

Add a natural flush

Natural-looking makeup has a slight rosy look to it, similar to a glow from a satisfyingly sweaty workout.

Don’t worry, we’re not asking you to hit the gym to get that flush.

Instead, use a large fluffy brush to apply a sheer blush on cheeks for a dreamy tinge of colour. If you want a more summery look, lightly apply bronzer to areas where the sun would naturally kiss your face: on the sides, along the jawline and down the nose.

A multi-functional compact like the By Terry Compact-Expert Dual Powder can be used as a bronzer, blush and highlighter in one to achieve a healthy glow.

To finish the overall look, lightly dab on a tinted lip balm like the Caudalie French Kiss, made with hydrating oils and a luxurious vanilla scent.
